چکیده

This paper presents a new importance sampling strategy for Monte Carlo ray tracing in which a rough estimate of the irradiance based on the photon map is combined with the local re ection model to construct more e cient probability density functions that can be used in an importance sampling scheme The algorithm gives unbiased results handles arbitrary re ection models and it is particularly e cient in scenes with highly non uniform indirect illumination Initial results and comparisons with traditional importance sampling strategies indicate a reduction in the noise level of more than

Importance Driven Construction of Photon Maps

Particle tracing allows physically correct simulation of all kinds of light interaction in a scene, but can be a computationally expensive task. Use of visual importance is a powerful technique to improve the efficiency of global illumination calculations. We describe a three pass solution for global illumination calculation extending the two pass approach proposed by Jensen. In the first pass ...

Pixel Cache Light Tracing

In this paper, we introduce Pixel Cache Light Tracing, which is a new low-noise combination of eye-path and light-path tracing. In the first pass, eye-path vertices are distributed from the observer and stored in a hit point map analogous to progressive photon mapping. In the second pass, photons are traced from the light source and projected to the image as well as gathered by the hit point ma...

Plane Sampling for Light Paths from the Environment Map

We present a method to start light paths on an emitting environment map in the context of Monte Carlo global illumination with image-based lighting or physical sky models. With this technique we can efficiently render unbiased caustics from these kinds of lights, for example using bi-directional path tracing. Additionally it is now possible to use algorithms like multiple importance sampling, p...

Real-time Gpu Photon Mapping

Photon mapping, an algorithm developed by Henrik Wann Jensen [1], is a more realistic method of rendering a scene in computer graphics compared to ray and path tracing. Unlike ray tracing, photon mapping first emits lots of photons from light sources in a scene and then uses the photon map to calculate the radiance of each pixel in the rendered scene. Previous work in the area include a GPU pho...
